Main implications

The Law on Education defines the goals of the education policy in Lithuania, the key principles of the education system, the basic structure of its organisation, activities, and relationships as well as the major commitments of the state in the field of education. The Law of Education (1991) marked the turn from the Soviet education system to the national education system of the Republic of Lithuania. The contents of education was humanised, shifted to liberal education, modernised, and interdisciplinary links were strengthened.

This is stipulated by other related legislation. One study week includes five study days. The maximum number of lessons per week varies from 25 (grade 1-4) to 35 (grade 5-12). The duration of a lesson varies from 35 minutes (grade 1) to 45 (grade 2-12).

Education and training required for a compulsory school teacher stipulated by this document

This is stipulated by other related legislation. Teacher training studies are integrated into bachelor or master study programmes at university. The teacher qualification can be achieved by completing a one-year teacher training study programme that does not award a degree.
