Main implications

Persons whose grandparents were Spanish citizens, but who had lost or been forced to renounce their citizenship due to exile caused by the Spanish Civil War or the dictatorship, could opt for Spanish citizenship by origin during a period of two years after the enactment of the law. The same right applied to the children of all former Spanish citizens.

Members of the international brigades who fought during the Spanish Civil War no longer had to give up their former nationality when seeking naturalisation by means of the Carta de Naturaleza (as foreseen by Royal Decree 39/1996). The details were to be outlined in a new royal decree.
