Population and Policy Database (PPD)

The Social Policy Archive for SHARE (SPLASH) represents a milestone in the evolution of multiple projects involving the support and vision of several partner institutions.
The Population and Policy Database (PPD) was originally created and launched in 2011 at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock. Headed by James W. Vaupel along with team members Gerda Neyer, Harald Wilkoszewski, Sebastian Klüsener, and Sanda Krapf, the database’s development aimed to increase access to public information by sharing high quality demographic and social policy indicators with researchers.
Population Europe Resource Finder and Archive (PERFAR)

The directors of the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy (MPISoc), Axel Börsch-Supan and Ulrich Becker, partnered with the coordination committee of the PPD in 2012. Then the Population Europe Secretariat in Berlin took over the management of the PPD’s first update. Later on, the Population Europe Resource Finder and Archive (PERFAR), however, replaced the PPD with its release in 2015. Coordinated by Diana López-Falcón with the guidance of the Scientific Advisory Board, PERFAR’s content provided legal documents, policy descriptions, and links to data resources attracting a more diverse group of users.
Data on migration policies for Italy, France and Spain were generously provided by the Collaborative SSH-FP7 Temporary versus Permanent Migration Project - TEMPER (http://www.temperproject.eu) in 2014.
Social Policy Archive for SHARE (SPLASH)
Between September 2016 and December 2022, the MPISoc has supervised the project with the Munich Center for the Economics of Ageing (MEA) coordinating the development of the current database - SPLASH. The Policy section currently offers information collected from the PPD and PERFAR until 2016.
Since January 2023, SPLASH has been developed by the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).
The project was coordinated until March 2024 by Diana López-Falcón.
